Today, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Veterans' Affairs have launched a commemorative medallion to pay tribute to those who served in the Vietnam War.
This medallion represents a small yet significant way to recognize the service of Vietnam veterans and their sacrifices. It also acknowledges the loss endured by those who did not return home and their families.
This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. Approximately 60,000 Australians served in the conflict, and more than 3,000 were injured. Tragically, 523 soldiers lost their lives. It is crucial that we show respect to those who served and to the families who supported them.
All veterans of the Vietnam War, as well as widows and other family members of veterans, are eligible to receive the medallions. They can apply for them to honor the bravery and commitment of the individuals who served their country. The introduction of the Vietnam War medallions is a reflection of the Australian Government's ongoing commitment to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this important milestone. This year-long initiative will reach its peak on Vietnam Veterans' Day, which falls on the 18th of August 2023, with a national commemorative ceremony.
